Transcript

I've updated about 15 more minutes of the transcript. It's taking soo much time!! Transcription is not hard work, just time-consuming.
Check the link on the right side of the blog.

I'm still developing my ideas about "possible paper topics" or arguments from this interview. There are some really good topics that Ken presents that are not "typical" to the mainstream history we are taught.
+ WWII did bring on good memories for military men while they were risking their lives overseas.
+ The Cold War was not necessarily affecting everyone in negative ways. ken was rather optimistic about the 1960's through the 1980's. He was "realistic," as he states, about the possible coming on nuclear attack. Quite contradictory to the scares and hysteria that history "usually" tells us about the Cold War.

  1. Hi Amanda,

Your blog is very impressive because you were able to capture the feeling and impressions of WW2 through the eyes of Ken, who experienced it first hand. It is clear you thoroughly researched the subject and spent a great deal of time and effort coordinating all that information together.

Also, viewing Ken's photos that he took first hand of the war brought your blog alive as well. You also address the cold war. I was a kid during the 1960's and the threat of nuclear attack was very real. We had Civil Defense drills and were shown movies on what to do in the event of an enemy attack by atomic bomb at school.

In later years I had the opportunity to visit Russia when it was the Soviet Union and see not only what communism represented, but it's stake in nuclear war and how they looked at the United States during that time based on visiting their war museums in Moscow and (then) Lenningrad. It was a quite unique experience to be sure, seeing perspectives from the other side!

Anyway,I look forward to seeing more entries and following your blog to its conclusion. Excellent work!

  2. Amanda,

Thanks for your blog! I like what you wrote here when you said "The Cold War was not necessarily affecting everyone in negative ways". It's always interesting to see history through the lens of individuals instead of social trends and large scale themes. Often I've found my grandparents memories of wars and eras as different than what I've learned in classes. Interesting stuff!
